Stephen Montague
Stephen Montague is an Anglo-American composer born 1943 (Syracuse, New York) and educated in the USA (Florida State and Ohio State Universities) who came to Europe first as a Fulbright Scholar in Warsaw (1972-74), then settled in London, 1974, where he continues to work as a freelance composer, pianist and conductor. His works have been performed worldwide on many festivals including Bang on a Can (New York), Festival d’automne (Paris), BBC Proms, Aldeburgh, Adelaide, Singapore and Hong Kong festivals and with ensembles such as the London Symphony Orchestra, BBC Symphony, Royal Ballet, Pacifica Quartet and Hilliard Ensemble.
In addition to tradition scores, however, he enjoys working in more experimental areas which include works such as his Horn Concerto for klaxon horn and an orchestra of automobiles and his 2007 World Superbike Championship commission- Bike Concerto for for 8 motorcycles, brass and percussion with 2007 World Superbike Champion James Toesland as the soloist. His commissions mix experimental interests with more traditional fare: a new orchestral work the Birmingham Royal Ballet, for example, will be followed by a new theatre work inside Brew Dog Brewery, Scotland.
