KLANKENBOS a sound drawing

Hallveig Agustsdottir is a visual and performance artist currently living in Belgium, where she received her education in Fine Arts. Continuing her studies in the UK, Hallveig obtained her diploma of PhD in Music Research from the School of Arts, Brunel University in London in 2013.
Interacting with music, sounds and noises in her visual arts, over the years Hallveig has explored a range of different mediums, such as painting, photography, video and performance art, as well as creating her own musical compositions. Currently Hallveig is focusing on the medium of drawing - in particular on the performative aspect - the movements, gestures and the sounds an artist makes while in the process of creating a drawing. By amplifying the drawing action with the use of contact microphone(s), and connecting it together with a live video projection she look for ways to portray both the individual and collaborative aspects of sound and image. And together with the Belgian composer Paul Craenen, Hallveig has designed her own interactive audiovisual system that she uses in her sound drawing performances.
Hallveig’s works have been performed and exhibited in Iceland, Belgium, the Netherlands, UK, Germany, USA and Japan.

FROM GRAPHIC SCORE TO SOUND DRAWING - A PERFORMANCE

Hallveig’s performances are purified reflections on sound and image, finding their roots in the 'graphic score' as it started to appear in the 1950s in the works of composers such as J. Cage, E. Brown, and M. Feldman. Each drawing leads towards and is at the same time the immediate result of a new composition. The improvised communication between artist, computer and musician creates an environment where sound and image combine and conduct each other.  What remains is a witness; a drawing / a video composition capturing the gesture of drawing, melody and rhythm.” (Roeland Nieuwborg © 2013)
