Lucier I
Alvin Lucier I
Opera with objects (1997) for performers with resonating objects
Music for Solo Performer (1965) for enormously amplified brain waves and percussion
Performed by the composer and Fengjastrútur
Opera with Objects is one of a series of Lucier's works which explore the resonant properties of everyday objects. One or more performers taps one object which, when coupled with another, produces vivid changes in timbre as well as loudness.
In Music for solo performer Lucier makes us listen to the rhythm of waves formed in the performers mind. This is a sonification of brainwaves produced by analog electrical and acoustical sounds, the music of mind itself. Although the piece would seem to be angled specifically to transcend normal “musical meaning” and address state of mind itself, Alvin Lucier says “I found the alphaʼs quiet thunder extremely beautiful.” (based on Prof. Michael Gardner)
The technical preparation and choice of percussion instruments for this performance is done by Hauke Harder.
